Here at Affinity we enable our students to become fully qualified hairdressers, on our NVQ Level 2 and 3 courses.  Students will experience a variety of lessons including theory, demonstrations, workshops and projects. These courses are taught by professional and experienced NVQ educators.

NVQ Level 2 and 3 in hairdressing

Qualification: NVQ Level 2 and 3 in hairdressing

Duration: 12-18 months


After successfully completing your NVQ level 2, we will provide you with an opportunity to progress to NVQ level 3 in hairdressing.

Course Outline


A real introduction into the hairdressing industry and its practices, the NVQ level 2 in hairdressing covers a vast amount of practical skills and theoretical knowledge. Covering all bases, we ensure students feel confident for when they enter the hairdressing industry. We will work with you to ensure you gain enough practical experience so you can seek or flourish in an independent salon. This will allow an excellent foundation of knowledge to build your career.

Course Content:


•Cutting and techniques

•Colouring hair

•Client care

•Health and Safety

•Shampoo and conditioning the hair and scalp

•Enhancing your communication skills

•Consultation and people skills

•Styling, dressing and finishing



During the course, you will be collating and gathering information to build your personal portfolio, which will be used for your assessment. The assessment will consist of both practical and theoretical online based tests.


From 1st October 2010 a National Minimum Wage (NMW) for apprentices was introduced for young people aged 16-18. The new rate is £2.73 per hour. The new NMW applies to time working plus time spent training as this is also part of the apprenticeship. You will work a minimum of 30 hours a week (Maximum 40 hours a week/8 hours a day if under the age of 18) with holidays. A grant of up to £1500 is available for salons accommodating our students (subject to meeting requirements).

Entry Requirements:


•GCSE grades in C or above in English and Maths (preferred).

•16-18 years old (Places for 19 years+ are available but limited)

•Work experience in a salon is an advantage
